At the 2024 Joy & Wholeness Summit—hosted by the Coalition for Physician & APP Well-Being and AdventHealth—our co-founder and Chief Wellbeing Economist, Dr. Sisi Hu, presented “Beyond Burnout: Leveraging AI and Existing Data to Improve Clinician Well-Being and Retention.” She walked through a case study in which a major health system used its EHR and HRIS data to launch an intervention that led to measurable gains in clinician satisfaction and lower turnover.
Dr. Hu then drew on parallels with climate-risk modeling, showing how forecasting future scenarios and estimating the cost of inaction can guide more effective planning in healthcare settings.
The discussion revealed that surveys by themselves can’t fully illuminate the complexities of clinician wellbeing with many wellbeing leaders in the audience revealing to us their challenges with using survey data alone. By combining survey responses with existing EHR and HRIS metrics, Dr. Hu demonstrated how to identify and reach providers who might not engage with traditional surveys. She shared results from Atalan’s latest research, which found that data-driven indicators uncover issues that would remain hidden if you rely solely on self-reported feedback. Attendees left equipped with concrete steps to integrate AI-driven data analysis into their well-being programs and better support clinicians at every level.
